Mosquito Repellent

About a month ago I posted about the mosquito ring tones. The speculation was teenagers would have them on their phones to facilitate covert messaging of some sort. But a CNN article describes that businesses, schools, and residences are putting up the ring tone as a way of repelling teens from an area where they may typically loiter. Reminds me of that X-Men who can make the high-pitched sound but I can't remember her name. (hell getting old) Anyway, why is it we as a species always have a knack for using technology against each other?

Mosquitoes are the only truly sadistic insect. When we hear that high pitched whine, we are trained to start slapping ourselves. We rarely actually hit (or even see) the mosquito!

Being of the age where I can't hear them very well any more, I just look for signs of people inexplicably slapping themselves.

LOL you two are correct heh.

I hate mosquitoes and they have always loved me. I can be group camping and I'll come away with 20 bites and everyone else will be like "there's mosquitoes?"

I lived in Africa for 2 years, in a small village. We don't have anything like the mosquitoes they have. Mosquito netting was absolutely necessary. Any part of your body that was touching the net while you slept would be bitten, and even the smallest hole in the netting would let in more skeeters, so you became very attentive to net care!

An upside to that story is that since I came back from Africa, I've been basically immune to mosquitoes here in the US. They bite me from time to time, but it never raises a welt or itches - and my African experience was 20+ years ago!

See my "African Tales" blog for more stories (linked from my main blog)

zorg - I wish I could say the same! I get terrible welts and it itches for a week. I had read once that it was the carbon dioxide we breathe out that attracts them, but I don't know if that is true or not. You'll probably laugh, but I wonder if it is something in our blood or something. My oldest son is full Korean and he gets bit like me all the time. He also gets the huge welts and itches. My youngest is 1/4 Korean and he is like his full Caucasian father, rarely gets bit and if he does, it's unnoticeable. Maybe oriental blood is yummy to mosquitoes! =P

I've heard that it's a combination of the carbon dioxide we exhale and our body heat, but that doesn't appear to be true. At least, not according to this USDA site.

It's sure true that some people get swarmed and others get ignored, and everyone reacts differently.

I don't think I can eat Limburger cheese now. =/

I didn't realize only 4-6 dozen species, out of the 2700, actually transmit disease. I had assumed they all could. Interesting.
