Diddy Blog "Gas Prices Are Too High"

Wow, this just shows how extreme wealth can corrupt some folks' minds. Here's Sean Diddy Combs blogging about how he's being forced to fly commercial airlines because flying his personal jet is getting too expensive with gas prices. And he's sharing with folks how shocking it all is. It really is out of touch with the masses that have given him his wealth. At the end he says he's even flying coach /gasp! But I've never seen leather seats when I fly coach. He's so out of touch he can't even differentiate between coach and first class. And for him to put this blog out there shows he is oblivious to how repulsive it is. The comment on the side is that it is a joke, but I think that was added post comments of venom imho.

Giving MicroLoans to Entrepreneurs in Developing Countries

DiaLogic has posted about an organization called Kiva that enables person-to-person microloans around the globe.

As I posted in his comments, I had wondered when this would come around when I first heard about microloans a few years back. I think they're a great idea btw.

The key with this Kiva system is they evaluate the entrepreneurs business proposals through field visits to minimize lenders' risk. From what I've read out on their site and some of the lenders and borrowers information, it looks like a great system.

I post on the Seattle PI soundoff boards - way more than I should. =P Anyway, one of the individuals I've come to know on the board is thezorg. He is a lawyer and has helped me to look at issues through the legal lens, clarifying the law, clearing up some of my misunderstandings. I always love folks who are willing to teach what they know without being condescending and thezorg fits the bill. Maybe I Need Drugs...

Ok so I'm a total square when it comes to drug use. I drink, gave up smoking 12 weeks ago today, but I have not done any other drugs in my lifetime. Strongest stuff I've ever taken is that codeine cough syrup my doctor gave me after my c-section. I came down with bronchitis and the coughing was so bad, she was worried my staples would come out. Really enjoyed the stuff, but once it was gone, it was gone. I've been offered pot, acid, and ecstasy, but never done them. I am curious about pot I must say. I think the reason I was averse to it was a friend of mine died (aspirated vomit) doing pot and drinking too much alchohol when I was 13 and it stuck with me.

So Allan over at camelsbackandforth is writing about this drug called Salvia he gave a go while visiting his brother. I've never even heard of this stuff let alone tried it. I think the weirdest drug I ever came across was in Kansas City Missouri when I was doing my paramedic internship a lifetime ago. It was called Water and it was cigarettes soaked in formaldehyde and then dried and smoked. Who comes up with this stuff?

Then ddjango over at P! is writing about a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem who recently published "mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times" and that Moses was flying higher than a kite when he saw the Burning Bush and scribed the 10 Commandments.

Perhaps the Bible would make some sense to me if I was doing a little Salvia...

Universal Healthcare - Reality of Canada's System

cul over at Ratboy's Anvil links to "Mythbusting Canadian Health Care Part I". It lists 10 complaints/assumptions/what-have-you that many throw up to scare Americans away from universal healthcare. I have looked for such succinct information on Canada's system and I loved the way this article addressed each issue.

I had no clue as to the cost of Canada's system for a family. $100/mo for basic coverage and when they say basic, it's not the same as when we say basic let me tell you. Add coverage for the rest of it through private insurance and it's another $300/mo for a family (if you pay individually - cheaper as a group)! $400 total! And that's for the whole enchilada!

If you've ever had a serious health issue in your family, you may know the fear of being denied coverage and specialized care. When my youngest son was born 3 months premature with hydrocephalus and hyperthyroidism secondary to my Graves Disease, I was so thankful my husband's company (Microsoft) covers absolutely everything. We received bills from the hospitals that totalled almost $600K. /choke! A 15 minute visit from a specialist can cost you a few thousand dollars! Microsoft paid the whole bill - we didn't even have a copay. (This is why my husband remains a loyal employee even though other opportunities have come along btw.) But most folks aren't that fortunate. If you have the common 80/20 plan, your 20% of that bill would have been $120K. I think folks who have never had a big hospitalization or treatment really don't have a clue about the cost of healthcare in this country. That's what makes it so easy for them to denounce those that file bankruptcy after a big health issue because they don't fully comprehend the actual costs. They're thinking a few thousand, not tens or hundreds of thousands, as your percentage. Then to top that off, insurance companies put caps on individuals. You reach that million dollar in services cap, you may be denied coverage. (I believe they are raising the cap to 1.5 or 2 million.) Who needs that kind of stress on top of the stress of the health issue? It's just wrong and inhumane. We need and must demand universal healthcare in this country.

Slavery in America

Michael Hawkins at Spontaneous Arising references a must-read story on immigrant workers being taken advantage of by sheep ranchers.

I am so in-line with Michael calling it slavery. I feel most folks think of slavery as someone literally chained with visible physical abuse. However, I believe the economic chaining we as American citizens allow and accept in this country is slavery and insidiously evil in its spooning that we drink down with thankfulness. When we say it is acceptable to pay someone $5.40/hr, we say slavery is acceptable. When it is ok for executives to make 10,000x what employees of the same company make, we say slavery is acceptable. And when citizens would rather be so angry at their fellow citizens for getting a handout of a few thousand each year rather than the corporations and its executives essentially getting handouts of millions each year, I just have to think I hope it's good. Whatever you're smoking that blinds you to the real inequities, I hope it's good.

Berkeley City Council vs the Marines

Cydney over at The Celebrity posted her views regarding what the Berkeley City Council is doing in regards to the Marine recruiting office.
Here's my comment left at Sound Politics Public Blog (see my favorites list).
"I'm totally for social protest. My problem with this situation is the city council becoming involved to encourage residents to pressure the recruiting office. Part of being a liberal is tolerance of others' PoV. We may not agree with the war in Iraq, we may not agree with the military in general, whatever, but it should then be a protest, not a city-wide bullying. If the city wants to be involved, they should look at things like what the laws are regarding military recruiters on campus."
