Bystanders of Man Beating Toddler

You may have read the recent story of Sergio Casian Aguilar beating a 2 year old toddler on the side of the road in Turlock California. It is brutal and you don't know if Sergio, who is assumed to be the father, had a mental illness or was on drugs or whatever other mind-altering scenario one can think of. However, this is the part that confuses me about the incident. In a few of the articles I've read, they discuss the various bystanders that stopped and "tried to stop the beating". I guess my issue is "tried"?

Here are some excerpts from the story:
Several motorists called 911 and tried to stop the beating, authorities said.
Dan Robinson, a local volunteer fire department chief, told The Modesto Bee that at first glance, he thought the child was a dead animal in the road. He said when he realized it was a child, he tried to stop Aguilar.

He said Aguilar had a "total hollowness in his eyes" and talked calmly of the boy being filled with "demons."
Witness Lisa Mota told the San Francisco Chronicle that Aguilar told people who tried to stop him that the boy was "trash."

It is true I was not there so I do not know what exactly happened. However, it appears he was unarmed and if folks were able to talk with him, why not rush him and take him to the ground? Is it that they could have, but chose not to? Was it fear of being hurt themselves? Is it turning a blind eye? I truly don't understand it.
Here's the full story.

It's a terrible event. I wondered the same thing. I would have been inclined to tackle him just to get him away from the infant if he didn't respond to verbal commands.

But hindsight is 20/20, especially when you're it's armchair hindsight.

I 100% agree with you. I was reading the story on CNN and looked under the blogs discussing the story because I too could not comprehend how no one stopped this horrible man. I'm heartened to see I'm not the only one who beleives the bystanders should have done more.
Nice blog.

I haven't seen any subsequent stories on this man so not sure what they uncovered as to 'why'.
