Minimum Wage

This Department of Labor map of the United States shows each state's minimum wage.

The federal minimum wage is $5.85/hour. All I can say to that is the folks who think that is acceptable have obviously never worked for minimum wage. Or if they have, they are out of touch with the reality of who earns minimum wage. I remember years ago watching some documentary where a Republican politician (don't remember her exact position) said only teenagers work for minimum wage. I rest my case.

3 states have minimum wages lower than the federal rate - Kansas, Georgia and Wyoming. For those states, the minimum would then be the federal rate. Kansas has $2.65/hr listed. o.O

My state of Washington has the highest currently at $8.07/hr. That's like $300 per week before taxes. Yikes. I know one can survive on this kind of money as I've done it. But it's not living. Not even close.

How much do you pay your yard help?

Hi S,
I do not have regular yard help. We do all our yardwork ourselves. I have hired some day laborers (legal citizens) through a nonprofit agency in Seattle to help us with some yard work when we've had projects or were on time crunches and we pay them $15/hr. even though the agency only requires $8/hr.

$8 is the new 'standard' wage for office temps here (or it would be if such jobs still existed)...it used to be $15, then $12, then $10... now it's $8 and there's no office work, only manual labor and cashier jobs...at least the cost of living is coming down to match falling wages.
