I LOVED this movie!
I picked up this movie looking for a night of comedy. It's hard to find a comedy I enjoy anymore. So many have humor that just isn't funny to my husband and I. Anyway, I enjoy Ryan Gosling as an actor and I had remembered the trailers looked pretty funny. Let's give it a go.
This movie was so much better than my expectations! It starts out a little quirky and you're not sure what's coming. Then it gets REALLY funny. There were a couple times I had to pause because my husband and I were laughing so hard. But then it becomes poignant. I loved it.
The part of the movie that has you laughing so hard at the beginning of the movie is what makes you think you will never become emotionally invested in this film, just enjoy it as a comedy. Somehow, this movie sucks you in (at least it did us) and even the 'ridiculous' seems just right.
My two absolute favorite things about this movie are:
1. This movie was cast superbly. There was not one actor in this movie I would change. They all felt so real and perfect in their roles it was a delight.
2. I love the message and the actions of the community. I've always been intrigued by our 'sense of community' and this movie really highlights it as well as provides a 'what if' to what we as people can do for our fellow people if we took the time and effort.

I liked this film too. Besides being funny, it was heartwarming (in an anti-Hallmark way) and I agree the cast was superb!
Totally surprised me. It was kind of like that moment in Shallow Hal that is very touching with the girl in the hospital except much more. We were also so very happy to just see comedic parts that were actually funny. =)
just saw Lars and the Real Girl, Gosling did a great job playing out his character's psychological transition from totally dysfunctional to somewhat functional; it was nice of them to leave out the predictable small-town drama as well
Patrick, dysfunctional to somewhat functional is a good way of putting it - I think he does that in Half Nelson too.
I think i was one of the few people that didn't really care for the movie "The Notebook" though he was fine in that.
I liked this movie too! How could you not like the Notebook!
