I had not heard boo about this movie until I saw it on the shelves at Blockbuster. Now, my not hearing boo doesn't really mean anything heh. I had picked it up as a family movie. Most of the time when I'm watching a family movie, I have to remind myself that I am watching it with the boys as it makes them happy and it doesn't matter that I don't really find the story interesting or funny or anything else. However, I really enjoyed this film!
It is a fairy tale with some of the standards you have come to expect from fairy tales (wicked witches, princes and princesses, magic, damsel in distress,...) however the story felt very fresh to me. I think that's why I enjoyed "Lady in the Water" even though so many seemed to abhor it. You have to keep in mind it's a fairy tale and then I find you can enjoy the fantastical.
The quality and the number of high-profile actors in this movie surprised me (especially since I hadn't heard about it) - Robert DeNiro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Claire Danes, narrated by Ian McKellen, cameos by Peter O'Toole and Rupert Everett. What's not to like in that list? And I thought the male leading actor who was unknown to me, Charlie Cox, did a great job. And, then there's the cutest mouse I've ever seen. That mouse is so adorable I found tons of google searches with folks asking about it. There's a clip on YouTube with some of the mouse scenes, but it would spoil the movie to watch it. This was a fun family movie after all and I recommend catching it - if you enjoy fairy tales.
